SARIWA MEANS FRESh

Kamusta na? Ako si Lorna, owner and steward at Sariwa Farm. I come from a long line of fishermen and farmers, this is a labor of love and a legacy in the making. My ancestors are from the northern region of the Philippines called Pangasinan (where salt is made), a rich and vibrant region nestled between land and ocean. Today, I am proud to cultivate nourishment and community at Sariwa Farm, a plot I lease in the sprawling Sammamish Valley, land of the Coast Salish people.

bayanihan

My practice is one of bayanihan, a kinship network that is non-extractive and non-exploitive, our ancestral antidote to capitalism. We are focused on limiting our carbon footprint and retaining our cultural heritage. Both of which were inherently connected in our pre-colonial way of life.

In farming, I keep in mind biodiversity, sustainability, natural plant nutrition, and natural pest management. This means utilizing methods that will cause the least amount of disruption, minimal tilling to preserve the diversity of organisms within the soil, avoiding chemical fertilizers that will endanger beneficial insects, with deep considerations of timing, seed source, and crop rotation for planting. This results in more nutrient dense foods. I plant seeds to feed my family and community nutrient dense foods that are culturally relevant and pesticide free.

a creative life

As a long time theatre artist and educator (from Shakespeare to shadow puppetry), I can teach young and old souls the theory, practicum, and performance. I studied Anthropology at UC Berkeley, trained at the Art Institute of Yogyakarta in Indonesia, and received a masters in Drama at San Francisco State University. Theatre arts is a lens through which I have learned about history and people, it has also become a means for exploring identity, centering lived experiences, uniting communities and imagining possible futures. TULOY NA!

The land provides so much - a boundless space to nurturing possibility and radical change. Our hope is that the next generation will be raised to care for each other as deeply as they will for the land, a mutual reverence. Come cultivate this vision with us!
